Kid's Craft: JJ's Aquarium

JJ saw an aquarium and said, “I wish I could have one at home.”  So we set to work.

I drew different shapes of sea creatures on card stock
and had JJ give them happy faces.
Using a pair of blunt tip scissors,
JJ cut the sea creatures out.
Cut and cut and cut...
All done!
We found a cardboard box and
placed a glittering tissue paper as the backdrop.
Apply Elmer's Glue to the shapes
and sprinkle various colors of glitters on them.
Get your Scissors, tape and thread for the next step.
Cut the thread to various lengths.
Tape one end to the shape
and the other end to the box to "hang" the creatures.
JJ: "This is hard work..."
Admire your aquarium and say "Fish"!

Praise Him

Last night, during worship practice, the members of the team remembered and prayed for a brother who had gone to be with the Lord.  I do not know this brother personally, but I felt a sense of sorrow in the room.  The verses from 1 Thessalonians 4 came to my mind as I opened my mouth to pray.

"13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words."  --1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

What comfort and encouragement we have through the promise of the Lord's salvation that we have the eternal hope of living with Christ forever.
I am certain that this brother is filled with God's joy and glory, playing his instruments (bongo drums) and praising God right now with his resurrected body.  I look forward to meeting him one day in the presence of God.  In the mean time, I pray for God's indescribable peace to comfort his family's temporary loss on earth. May He renews the joy and hope in the family to rejoice in His coming.

Lala, Our Garfield

Handsome Lala, our Garfield

The girls and I went to pick up my friend, Michelle, from her cousin, Jiin’s place.  As soon as we stepped in the house, this fluffy, sweet orange tabby came and rubbed his chubby body against the girls’ legs and purred.  He event rolled on the floor so the girls could pat his tummy.  Jiin told us that his name was “Marcus” before he was abandoned and found by her family.  Since he was found right outside of Sinbale ( 辛巴樂)the family named him “Lala”.
Right away, F fell in love with him and asked, “Could we have him?”  My face was all red when I heard her absurd request.  "Honey, this is auntie Jiin's cat.  We don't come to her house and ask for her cat."  But to all our surprise, Jiin gladly replied, "Actually, you are more than welcome to have him.  I have been so busy with my little girl that I can no longer take care of my pets the way I'd like to.  If you like him that much, he's yours."
The girls' faces lit up and asked, "Could we?  Could we?"
To make the story short, H and I agreed to adopt Lala as F's 10 year old bday gift.  F was absolutely thrilled.
4 1/2 years old Lala
F was not the only person to have her wish come truth.  To have Lala in the house also fulfilled my childhood dream.
When I was a 1st grader, I found a white kitten at our front door.  I begged my grandmom to let me feed the kitten.  Though Gran grumbled that once I feed the kitten, it would never leave, she gave me a dish of milk.  As I watched the kitten lick the milk dry, I grew a new found love for cats.
Guess what my favorite cartoon character is?  Of course, it's Garfield!   I loved the personality, the smarts, the sleepy eyes and the rare tenderness he has deep down for his family.
I have had several encounters with cats that made me believe that I am a cat person.
My last year in college, I had two graduate students as my next door neighbors.  During Thanksgiving break that year, my neighbors flew home and left their cats in the apartment.  I had the habit of leaving my sliding door open to let the air in.  One night, while I was preparing for dinner, someone paid me a visit and scared the daylight out of me.  One of the cats walked in my sliding door and gave himself a tour.  He looked so at home that made me feel like I were the intruder.  Haha.
When my family moved to Penang, I went to an English expatriate friend's house for Bible study one morning and met her kitten.  Out of all the ladies in the living room, the gray kitten chose to sit next to me.  I patted the kitten while listening to the lesson.  A few minutes later, I found the little thing leaned against me and felt asleep.  My friend asked if I would adopt this kitten.  My heart said yes.  But after I learned that the kitten would most likely be put down if my family should move back to the States, I decided the timing was not right.  I could not let my impulse shorten a beautiful life.  I could wait.

JJ, you are choking me...I can't smile!!
I picked up a few necessities for Lala before he came to live with us.  At the pet store, I asked the lady at the counter if I need to do anything to prevent our Golden Retriever from potentially biting or hurting the cat.  The lady looked at me with a grin and said, "oh, don't you worry about the cat.  The cats are usually the dominant ones in the house.  You should worry about your dog."
When we brought Lala back, he hid under our beds most of the time and seemed frightened.  He would only come out for meals and bathroom breaks.
After the first three days, he was comfortable enough to come out and inspect the house.  We had been very used to patting Maxie, our Golden that when we first patted Lala, we were amazed at how soft his fur was compared to Maxie's.  I love Lala's white feet.  It seemed that Lala were wearing mittens.  I suppose that's why the nursery rhyme says:
Three little kittens they lost their mittens,
and they began to cry,
"Oh mother dear,
we sadly fear that we have lost our mittens."
What! Lost your mittens, you naughty kittens!
Then you shall have no pie."

New Foot--Overcast Foot

Two weeks before Christmas, my son, Z, asked what gift I’d like to get.  I told him, “Just get me something I could use for my sewing.”  And he got me this Overcast Presser Foot.  I do not have a serger, a side cutter attachment or even a blanket stitch setting on my machine. With the built in guide on the overcast foot, the zigzag st. are now so precisely wrapping the edge of the fabric.  Brilliant!  Thanks, son.  I love this Christmas gift.

Where Have All The Flowers Gone

One day while listening to the radio in the car, we heard the song that defined the “Flower Child” age.  H and I could not help but walk down the memory lane and give the girls a history lesson.  When we got home, this was what the girls did.  Sure put a smile on my face.  Peace.

1st Animated HTML Button

I saw this post on My Poppet and decided to give it a go.  Using Bamboo tablet, I created this image.  And here it is!  My very first animated HTML button.  Whoohoo!
This was a successful test project.  Next time, I'd like to add a back drop to the button and utilize Picnik for additional effects.

Mermaid Costume for JJ

JJ wanted to be a mermaid this year and picked this pattern at the store.  The mermaid fever had long passed by this time and there were only two patterns to choose from.  By looking at the picture on the envelope , I was not thrilled.  I mean, the crown and the top make the whole costume look cheesy.  And let's not forget a mom's dismay when I pictured JJ shivering on an October night with this short sleeve dress.
I picked up this blueish green long sleeve top at Target as replacement for the top.  It was bell shaped and needed a little touch of "sea life".
I cut a piece of rectangle, hemmed the long edges and gathered the center line.  Pinned in place.  Turned the top inside out and sewed the two sides of the shirt in 2" (a few inches below armholes) to make the top fitted.

Turned the top right side out, hand stitched the "bras" in place.  Added a piece of sequence at the center.
Worked on the skirt using the pattern.  Instead of attaching the skirt to the top, I added a waist band to the skirt and had the skirt as one piece (thus, no need to sew in a zipper as the pattern instructed.  sweet!)  I did not want to make a dress just JJ's size and only have her wear it for a day.  Thinking like a frugal mom, I sewed the skirt one size bigger.  Of course, my thrifty spirit was challenged when I fitted JJ into the skirt.   JJ's petite and the skirt was dragging on the floor.  She would be tripping over her skirt before she could walk out the front door.  I folded the "fins" of the skirt under and hand stitched to shorten it.  Looked just as great with the doubled up fins.
Right before heading out, I felt something was still missing from this outfit and quickly sewed a scallop with the remanant and attached it to a hair pin.
Happy mermaid , relieved mom.

One Hour Candy Corn Costume

Do you have an indecisive child who could not make up her mind to dress up or not, or what to dress up as until  the 3rd week of October and decided if you love her enough, you'd do magic for her?  Well, I have one whom I love dearly but drives me up thewall with her indecisiveness and the last minute panic inspiration.
Until she made up her mind, I decided to focus my energy on JJ's mermaid dress (read how I "wrestled" with the dress in my next post).
She finally said she "would not mind" dressing up as a candy corn.  Yippe!  The hardest part is over!
was too lazy did not have time to sew the bodice, so I got a white tank for the top. The rest took very little time to complete. You ask how I did it?  Short cuts, short cuts and more short cuts.
Stitch the yellow and orange fabrics (1/2 yd. each) together and press seam open.
Fold the tank to the desired length and use the "new waist line" as guide to draw the two sides of the skirt.  Add 1/2" seam allowance, cut the sides and sew close.  With right sides facing, stitch the skirt to the tank (at your new waist line).
Cut felt pieces to make candy corn appliques.
Now I have a sweet candy corn.

Clowning Around

Our dear friend came over the day before Halloween to drop off these special marshmallow treats for the kids.  The kids oohed and ahhed and had a blast making faces to match their treats.
It amused me to see that each treat happened to match the kids' Ts. ;)

Mrs. Potato Head Costume

My Sketch of Mrs. P
I needed a costume and I needed one bad.  Our CG was assigned to host the welcoming table at the Family Fun Fest.  And dressing up for the event was a MUST!  I was so busy sewing the girls’ costumes that I only had one night left to come up with an easy custom.
I searched for costume images and quickly realized that while I could not pull off being a princess, a gypsy or goldilocks, I could, however, be a very convincing Mrs. Potato Head.

Luckily, I had a hot glue gun and enough felt.  It was the easiest costume I've made so far.  Done in 1 hour. Woo-hoo!

November Aha!--Trouble With Stitches

Who does not love neat stitches on projects and those eye-candy fabrics?  But once in awhile, I’d see these ugly pucks.  And I know, I have stitch troubles.
Ugly in the front. (picture on top)
Uglier in the back! (picture below)
I knew this was mainly a thread tension issue.  Tried adjusting thread tension up then down; nothing worked.  But, whenever I took out the bobbin and replaced it with another one, the stitches appeared to be perfect again.
After a few incidences of having to change my bobbins, I took a serious look at them and noticed the ones that caused the pucks looked unevenly threaded.  Funny that I've ALWAYS used the auto bobbin winder on my machine, and never wind the bobbins by hand...  That's when I realized that I DID interfere with the winding by hand a few times when I was so bored watching the winder.  I thought I was doing the winder a favor by pressing the thread down a few times to get "even" distribution of the thread.  Ha, I was actually doing myself a disservice.
Bobbin on top: what I need.
Bobbin on e bottom: uneven, trouble making bobbin; a direct result of my own foolishness.

The lesson learned: I will keep my hands to myself and trust my machine to do its job.
